Punjab-bound goods train coming from Karachi derailed near Jung Shahi railway station in Thatta district on Monday after a reported brake failure, railway officials said.

According to initial reports, the incident occurred when the train’s air-pressure braking system failed, making it difficult for the driver to control the movement of the freight train. Officials stated that as a result, the train crossed a safety block before derailing.

The derailment caused the engine and three bogies of the goods train to come off the tracks. Railway authorities confirmed that the track was partially damaged due to the impact, temporarily disrupting rail operations in the area.

Soon after the incident, railway staff and concerned officials rushed to the site to assess the situation and begin preliminary recovery efforts. Security and technical teams also secured the area to ensure no further risk to ongoing operations.

Officials said that restoration work on the damaged track will begin once a relief team arrives from Kotri Junction. Until then, rail traffic in the affected section remains suspended or rerouted depending on operational feasibility.

Preliminary assessments suggest that the failure of the braking system played a key role in the accident, though a detailed inquiry has been launched to determine the exact cause and whether any technical negligence or maintenance issues contributed to the malfunction.

Railway authorities added that safety protocols are being reviewed to prevent similar incidents in the future, especially on freight routes where heavy goods trains operate at high load capacity.

No casualties were reported in the incident, and all crew members of the train are reported to be safe. However, the disruption has raised concerns about the condition of railway infrastructure and maintenance standards on key freight routes between Karachi and Punjab.

Further updates are expected once the relief and repair teams complete their initial inspection and restoration work.
